How to Manage Holiday Stress in Your Business: A Practical Guide

8/25/2023

Picture
For many businesses, the festive season turns out to be anything but merry. Unfortunately, holiday stress statistics show that 54% of employees feel stressed leading up to the holidays. And the increased workload the Christmas season creates tops the causes of that stress.

Understanding these factors can help businesses to better support their employees during the holiday season, fostering a more positive and productive work environment.

One of the tips we give in this post for cutting down on holiday stress is planning your Christmas party early and getting it out of the way. Conversely, here are 5 tips from HR360Inc to help make that happen:

Top Reasons for Workplace Holiday Stress

The holiday season, while filled with joy and celebration, can often lead to increased stress in the workplace. The pressure to meet year-end goals, along with personal commitments, can create a challenging environment for both employees and management. Here are some of the top reasons why holiday stress tends to escalate in a business setting:
  • Year-End Deadlines: Many businesses have fiscal year-end goals and deadlines that coincide with the holiday season, creating pressure on employees to perform.
  • Increased Workload: Preparing for time off, handling extra customer demands, and year-end tasks can lead to a significant increase in workload.
  • Balancing Personal and Professional Life: Employees may struggle to juggle holiday planning, family commitments, and work responsibilities, leading to emotional stress.
  • Limited Staffing: With many employees taking time off, those remaining may feel overwhelmed by the increased responsibilities.
  • Unrealistic Expectations: High expectations for holiday sales or performance, without proper support or resources, can cause tension and anxiety.
  • Lack of Planning: Poor planning for the holiday season can result in last-minute scrambling, causing unnecessary stress and chaos.
Picture
In other words, ’tis the season to be stressed. The good news is you can adopt these tips below that will help you and your team manage the stress of the holiday season.

Tips for Managing Holiday Stress in Your Business
Bring in Extra Help During the Festive Season
Picture
Read this list of tips and tactics. They help reduce holiday stress in your business. And keep stress low for your team as well.

With permanent employees booking time off at the same time the company experiences a surge in business, it’s hardly surprising many business owners and employees suffer ‘festive fatigue’ at this time of year.

One effective way of managing holiday stress is to hire extra helping hands at Christmas.

Help Alleviate Holiday Stress with a Christmas Party
Picture
There’s nothing quite like letting our hair down with colleagues at the end of the year than having a Christmas party. Moreover, this much-loved annual event has a multitude of stress management benefits, including giving employees the chance to mingle, giving them something to celebrate and making them feel valued and that they’ve helped achieve something worthwhile.

Get the Christmas Party Planning Done Early

Despite the many benefits of Christmas office parties, organizing the festive social gathering is not without its stresses. As such, eliminate this additional festive stress by ensuring the social engagements have been planned and ‘ticked off’ well before the bedlam of the festive season kicks in.

Get Christmas Gift Sending to Colleagues and Clients Out of the Way
Picture
Experiencing festive burnout by having too many things to do in a short space of time is one of the holiday stress facts no small business can afford to ignore.

Similar to arranging the Christmas party well in advance, festive gifts should be sent to colleagues, customers, clients, partners and suppliers early, so it’s one less job to worry about during the busy festive period.

Pre-Plan Your Marketing Campaign

Christmas offers fantastic marketing opportunities, particularly for businesses operating in the retail, catering, leisure and food and drinks industries.

Another good stress management strategy to help reduce holiday stress caused by running marketing campaigns during this hectic time of year is to pre-plan a marketing campaign.

For example, get blogs and social media posts written and scheduled well in advance so you’re not having to use valuable employee time on such time-consuming activities.

Avoid Agreeing to Meetings
Picture
Holiday stress statistics show that up to 69% of people feel stressed due to having a “lack of time in the holiday period.”

Even the most pedantic of clients won’t want to have a meeting scheduled on Christmas Eve. With a million and one things going on, the busy holiday season isn’t the time to schedule a month of back-to-back meetings.

Most meetings with clients and colleagues will be able to wait until the New Year, so don’t make the season busier than it needs to be.

Streamline Business Operations
Picture
Another key way of managing holiday stress is to streamline business operations throughout the month of December.
Streamlining activities, such as turning inventory alerts on to notify you when certain stock is running low, is an effective stress management strategy that will help the festive season run smoothly and prevent stress overload from kicking in.

Tackle Festive Money Worries by Generating Additional Cash at Christmas

Check out another leading holiday stress fact: The festive season creates worry about money.

Read this survey carried out by the investment firm Principal Financial Group. It found that 53% of people feel financially stressed at Christmas.

This table organizes the essential details of each tip, providing a clear and concise reference for managing holiday stress in your business.
Picture
So, do you worry about the financial impact Christmas has on your business? If so, aim to generate an additional cash flow by implementing strategies like festive sales. Other options include 2-for-1 offers. Also, you can try introducing a special new festive product.

However, don’t wait for Christmas to put these strategies in place. Implement them well in advance. Then, you won’t juggle too many tasks and suffer from festive burnout in the process.

The Top 3 Business Opportunities of the Next Decade (and How to Capitalize on Them)

8/25/2023

Picture
The biggest business opportunities in the coming years lie within these three industries.

As someone who has been in the business world for some time now, I've seen trends come and go. One thing that has always remained constant is the need for entrepreneurs to innovate and create new ways to make money. There are a lot of ways to do this, but these three are my personal favorites.

I predict that in the coming years, real estate, artificial intelligence and finance — specifically mortgage companies — will be the three biggest business opportunities. These are the three industries that will see a lot of growth over the next decade, and I'm going to explain why.

The rise of Proptech: Transforming the real estate industry

While real estate may seem like a conventional industry, there are some unconventional concepts within it that I believe will lead to major progress in the coming years.

Proptech (property technology) has been growing rapidly over the past few years, enhancing the way we buy, sell and manage real estate.

The real estate industry has traditionally been slow to adopt technology, and that's part of the reason why it's taken so long for proptech to develop. However, I believe that as this technology becomes more widely used, it will dramatically improve the way we buy and sell homes. The first significant change will be in how we find properties for sale.

Increasing accessibility and transparency: Fintech revolutionizing finance

Finance has always been a lucrative industry, but it's now becoming more accessible to the average person. This is all thanks to new technologies, such as fintech apps and peer-to-peer lending, which make it easier for people to manage and invest their money irrespective of the capital amount.

Additionally, these technologies are making finance more transparent. Mortgage lending, in particular, is an industry within finance that is expected to see maximum growth.

The U.S. alone has over $10 trillion in outstanding residential mortgage debt, and as AI continues to diversify the lending process, we can expect more people, even with average credit, to seek mortgage loans providing new opportunities for the lenders themselves and the whole real estate industry.

These developments, of course, are likely to have a positive impact on the economy. As technology continues to make it easier for people to manage their money, more people will be able to invest in real estate and other assets. This could increase the number of home purchases and help make homes more affordable.

AI in mortgage lending: Efficiency and opportunities

Artificial intelligence (AI) may be applied to many different industries, but it has the most potential in mortgage lending. AI enables lenders to quickly and accurately underwrite loans, reducing the time and cost involved in the process, while also identifying patterns and trends in the market, allowing lenders to invest better.

There are also AI-based solutions that specifically cater to better scenarios to offer premium services to specific niches, such as elder care recommendations in real estate investments. The mortgage industry is moving toward AI-based solutions because they help lenders to do more with less. As banks continue to deal with the costs of compliance, technology will be an important tool for them to stay competitive in the marketplace.

The benefits of AI are not limited to mortgage lending. Auto lenders have already begun using the technology to streamline their processes, allowing them to provide more personalized offers and faster approvals.

Implementing new business models: Networking and building strategic partnerships

Networking and building strategic partnerships are essential for entrepreneurs seeking to succeed in the real estate, AI and finance industries. Entrepreneurs who want to enter these industries can begin by cultivating relationships with key players, industry experts and stakeholders. These valuable connections offer support, resources — and access to new opportunities.

Moreover, you'll have:

Access to resources: Strategic partnerships and networking can offer access to a wide range of resources, including capital, technology, talent and industry expertise. Key partnerships can help leverage these resources effectively to achieve a specific goal.

Collaboration opportunities: Building connections and partnerships with other industry players opens up opportunities for collaboration on projects, research and development initiatives. AI, finance and real estate are already complicated. To solve a problem in one area, it's often necessary to combine knowledge from multiple disciplines.

Business development: Networking and partnerships can offer opportunities for business development and expansion. Collaborations with real estate developers, fintech startups and AI companies can help entrepreneurs identify new markets, expand their service offerings or access new distribution channels.

I have a strong conviction that the top three business opportunities for the next decade lie in real estate, AI and finance. This is because these three areas are ripe for disruption, and the use of technology will continue to shape our lives. As we move into an AI-driven world, businesses that can adapt to these changes will be more successful than ones that don't.

In the next decade, we will see massive disruptions in these areas. The most important thing for any business to do is to understand how technology is affecting their industry and use it to their advantage.

Ten Tips For Networking Excellence In 2023

8/25/2023

Picture
Networking is an essential skill for entrepreneurs to learn because it generates business.

The term networking can become over complicated. It is simply starting and nurturing relationships which is something that humans do throughout life.

It doesn’t have to be difficult. Practice, repetition and following the tips below will help you build rewarding professional relationships wherever you are, whether that’s at work, a seminar, a party or on a flight.

Define Your Objectives.

Who do you want to meet and why? How many networking events will you commit to attending? Where will you go to network? How will you measure your progress? What do I want to get help with?

Asking yourself these powerful questions is a great place to start. You can’t hit a goal without a target, so be strategic about your time and your intentions.

Be Mindful Of Your Personal Brand

First impressions really do count. Before attending a networking event, think about how you will introduce yourself. Do you have an elevator pitch of around 30 seconds? If not, write and practice one. Make sure you are dressed well and feel confident in your appearance (whatever that means to you). Your personal brand also follows you online, so be mindful of how you want to show up.

Find A Networking Partner

Networking can feel scary. Introverts should find someone to attend events with to take the edge off. This tip is also very good if you know that you need help staying accountable. Having a networking partner will mean you’re both more likely to show up.

Be Vulnerable

Is anybody surprised that 75% of entrepreneurs have reported concerns for their mental health? Running a business is hard and can be a lonely road. This is not to say that you should treat networking as a free talking therapy, but be vulnerable about the problems in your industry or that you’re facing in business. Vulnerability builds deeper connections more quickly, and you never know if the person you’re talking to has the perfect solution to the issue that’s holding you back.

Take Advantage Of The Internet

LinkedIn is not just an online resume. It’s the most suited platform for building professional relationships, so make sure to interact with content, post your own content and send direct messages. Aside from LinkedIn, you can network on every other social media platform. Attending online workshops and being active in forums are other ways to meet people who share your interests.

Always Add Value

When you make a connection ask yourself two questions.

  1. How can I help this person?
  2. Who else in my network can help this person?

Openly sharing knowledge, contacts and opportunities to help others win will create a culture of generosity within the relationship. The other person will be more likely to help and introduce you to others when the time comes.

Listen

People tend to talk more than they listen. If you can learn to truly listen, you will gather so much information about people, the industries they are in and the professional problems they face. It is said that knowledge is power.

Follow Up

Networking doesn’t start until you follow up. Aim to send a text, email or direct message within 24 hours of meeting someone. Check in with them every 3 to 6 months to further nurture the relationship.

Review Your Progress

Six months after attending a networking event, review the relationships that were built. You might start to notice trends such as which types of events are the most beneficial to your networking goals. From this exercise, you can tailor your networking strategy if needed.

Take The Pressure Off

Building relationships is a skill that you have already been practicing for years, so try not to feel intimidated by the word networking or by trying to ‘do it right’. The more you network, the more confident you will get.
Picture
Networking is about establishing connections and creating a supportive community. Even if you don’t have a specific product or service to promote, your presence can still contribute to engaging conversations, the exchange of ideas, and potential collaborations.

An Entrepreneur's Guide to Achieving a Net-Zero Business

8/25/2023

Picture
From conducting a carbon footprint assessment to setting goals and investing in energy-efficient technologies, how to transform your company into a greenhouse gas emissions-neutral enterprise.

Key Takeaways
  • The benefits of going net zero
  • How to get started on your journey

Around the globe, companies and their green entrepreneurs are rapidly shifting focus to mitigating the effects of climate change, through both regulation and a variety of innovative solutions. The International Energy Agency estimates that global energy investment will need to more than triple to approximately $4 trillion for the world to achieve net-zero emissions by the year 2050. And although large organizations will likely lead the way, small businesses have a significant role to play in building a cleaner and more sustainable future. So, it's important for all owners, as well as other leaders, to understand what steps they need to take to address this existential challenge.

What is "net zero?"Greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere are widely considered to be the primary driver of climate change. They thicken the atmosphere, prevent heat from escaping and so ultimately warm the planet. While these gases occur naturally, increased human activity since the industrial revolution has significantly elevated their levels. And, according to the EPA, nearly 80% of greenhouse gas emissions consist of carbon dioxide.

The term net zero refers to the ability to balance the amount of greenhouse gasses emitted by removing an equal (or greater) amount from the atmosphere. A company that removes more such gases through environmentally friendly practices than it produces is said to be net zero.

For entrepreneurs looking to transition their companies in this way, it's essential to understand the sources of harmful emissions.

Generally speaking, there are three main categories:
  • Scope 1: This type is generated as a direct result of company operations, including a fleet of company-owned vehicles or operating a manufacturing facility.
  • Scope 2: These are associated with the energy consumed by a business, such as purchased electricity, heating or cooling.
  • Scope 3: Emissions of this type are indirect, occurring throughout a business's value chain, including the extraction and production of raw materials, employee commuting and the use or disposal of sold products.

While the road to net zero may seem daunting, small businesses can take incremental, innovative and practical steps to address all three of these tiers.

Net zero benefitsBeyond the positive environmental impacts, net-zero status can enhance a brand's reputation, attract environmentally-conscious customers, yield cost savings, ensure regulatory compliance and future-proof a business. It is, then, not only an environmental imperative but also a strategic opportunity.

A deeper dive into those benefits:
  • Brand recognition and customer loyalty: A 2020 IBM study found that 57% of all consumers were willing to change their buying habits to help the environment.
  • Access green funding and investment: Investors and financial institutions increasingly prioritize businesses that are committed to sustainability. This can include loans, grants or venture capital investments specifically designated for environmentally responsible businesses.
  • Cost savings: Net zero often goes hand in hand with implementing energy-efficient technologies, optimizing resource usage and reducing waste. This can lead to significant financial savings over time.
  • Legal compliance: Governments and regulatory bodies worldwide are implementing stricter environmental regulations. By proactively adopting net-zero goals, entrepreneurs can ensure compliance with current and future requirements.
  • Fostering innovation: The net-zero endeavor encourages entrepreneurs to think innovatively and seek new solutions to reduce both emissions and resource consumption.

Getting started on your journey
  • Conduct a carbon footprint assessment: This is a vital first step, and a comprehensive inventory will include both direct (Scope 1) and indirect (Scope 2 and 3) emissions. By quantifying them, executives can identify areas of high impact and prioritize efforts for reduction.
  • Set emissions reduction goals: Setting targets for this task provides a roadmap for action and allows businesses to track progress. It's critical for goals to be science-based, as having the right ones will help prioritize investments and reap ongoing benefits in efficiency measures and resulting cost savings.
  • Invest in energy-efficient equipment and other infrastructure: Energy efficiency is a crucial aspect of the net-zero journey. Enterprises and organizations can start by identifying opportunities to reduce consumption within their operations, including upgrading to energy-efficient equipment.
  • Transition to renewable energy: Sources such as wind, solar, geothermal and hydro typically produce significantly fewer emissions than traditional energy sources. For example, according to the World Resources Institute, electricity generated from coal produces eight times the amount of carbon dioxide as that from solar energy.
  • Carbon offsetting: In many cases, businesses will have emissions that are essentially impossible to eliminate. Carbon offsetting can be a tool to compensate — including investing in projects that remove or reduce greenhouse gases elsewhere, such as carbon-storing agricultural practices and reforestation.
  • Continuously measure progress: Measuring success is essential, and one way to do that is through key performance indicators (KPIs) that align with your emission reduction targets.

Achieving net zero can be complex and confusing, and guidance from sustainability experts or coaches can help make it more attainable, including helping you set the right goals in the first place, then offering tailored solutions and holding entrepreneurs accountable.
